Founded by Scarlet Johansson and Kate Foster, The Outset is a consciously clean skincare brand focused on creating radically gentle skincare to achieve hydrated and radiant skin. We worked with The Outset team to launch their e-commerce experience on Shopify that extends the brand into the digital space.

Goal

Launch a Scalable, Story-Driven E-Commerce Experience

The Outset partnered with Barrel to launch their new direct-to-consumer Shopify Plus website, with the goal of delivering a best-in-class e-commerce experience from day one. At launch, the team prioritized key features such as subscriptions, product bundling, and rich storytelling to effectively communicate the brand’s unique ingredients and value propositions—laying a strong foundation for long-term growth and customer engagement.

A Modular System that Balances Brand and Conversion

We took a modular approach to designing The Outset’s website, enabling the brand to scale seamlessly as it experienced rapid growth. By creating flexible landing page templates and a robust system of interchangeable modules, designed to highlight storytelling, value propositions, and the brand mission—the Outset team could easily mix and match components for new product launches and long-term promotions, ensuring adaptability without compromising design consistency.
Our first step in launching a new product and website was to create detailed wireframes that outlined the site’s structure, identified key user touch points for conversion, and established a compelling narrative to introduce the brand effectively.
After finalizing the brand world, The Outset was ready to see how it would translate into the digital space. Our challenge was to ensure that the digital experience captured Scarlet Johansson’s brand essence down to the finest detail.

As mobile remains a key touchpoint for users on the go, it was essential to design a mobile experience that delivers the same distinct and immersive feel as the desktop version.
The Outset launched with a three-step regimen, allowing users to purchase all products as a bundled set. To support this, we designed a dedicated module that told the story of each product and its role in a daily skincare routine. This approach not only helped drive conversions but also increased average order value (AOV) by encouraging users to see the value of the full regimen.
As a new brand entering a competitive space, it was essential to incorporate storytelling moments that set The Outset apart. We strategically paired these narratives with product features to create a seamless connection between brand values and the user’s shopping experience.
Design Process
With in-house designers and developers, our teams collaborated seamlessly from kickoff to launch. Regular check-ins ensured the work aligned with client goals, was executed smoothly, and stayed on schedule. This close partnership allowed both teams to feel confident in the process and proud of the work we created together and most importantly, made the client satisfied.
Development Handoff
As the designer, I ensured we held regular internal check-ins and design walkthroughs before presenting to the client. These sessions allowed for candid feedback and alignment across both teams. Toward the end of development, I conducted thorough visual QA across all pages to ensure the staging site matched the designs with pixel-perfect accuracy.
